Marwell Zoo welcomes an endangered okapi calf

Marwell Zoo in Hampshire is celebrating the rare and safe arrival of an endangered okapi calf born at the zoo – and it’s a girl! The precious female calf has been named by keepers as Niari, which means ‘rare’ and is an area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where okapis are found in its tropical rainforests. First-time mum, Daphne, and Niari are both doing well and are currently off show, out of the public eye, to ensure they bond and the calf settles during the nesting period. The Southampton and Region Hoteliers Association launched a new award scheme back in July of 2018 and with a month to go until the awards ceremony, the finalists for each category have just been announced.  A ‘meet the finalist’ afternoon took place mid-December 2018 where the sponsors met with their finalists to allow them to choose their category winner. Marwell Zoo shows off magnificent animals during annual stocktake

The New Year has got off to a busy start for keepers at Marwell Zoo, near Southampton, as they complete an audit of every species in the park. The mammoth task is led by zoo registrar Debbie Pearson, who is busy tallying up dozens of animals including every resident mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish and invertebrate. There were around 2,000 animals across 143 species recorded in 2017.
