Since, opening in 2007, the original Mango Thai in Portswood’s boho student area has become renowned on the South Coast for its intimate charm and vibrant atmosphere.MangoThai

The family-run Tapas Bar has since opened two more in the city. The second on Above Bar Street is located footsteps from the Guildhall and Mayflower Theatre, making it ideal if you are looking for a pre- or post- concert/theatre drink or meal. The most recently opened is a short walk from Ocean Village marina and Oxford Street.

Offering an informal and fun dining experience, there’s nothing quite like the energy that spills out of Mango’s front doors; low lighting and candles, big windows, exotic murals, tropical plants and eclectic music all add to the promise of a Thai beach bar. The food though, is ultimately Mango’s greatest pull… Thai cuisine is a blend of spicy, salty, sweet and sour, and this balance of tastes is the essence of Mango’s dishes, which are made to order by their team of Thai chefs. Spices are specially imported from Thailand and whenever possible only fresh ingredients and locally sourced meat is used.

A separate menu is available for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets, and other requirements are well accommodated for on request. Combining Thai food with small plates provides diners with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of the tastes of Southeast Asia together; and following Thai culture, Mango’s menu is format free—enjoy tapas whichever way takes your fancy: a starter then a main, a mix of dishes all together, or the ‘Spanish’ way, enjoyed with a drink, a couple at a time.

Specialities from the tapas menu include Coconut Chicken, Soft Shell Crab and Crispy Beef, and the authentic Thai curries and noodle dishes from the main menu are not to be missed by any account. The kitchens are open 7 days a week from midday, with good lunch deals and 4 for 3 on Thai Tapas until 5pm. Other offers include 2-4-1 cocktails daily at the Above Bar venue, and 20% off the food bill when you book for or after 9.30pm at Above Bar and Portswood. Mango holds weekly live music nights across the three venues—check the website for up-to-date listings—and should you be visiting over a weekend, the Ocean Village site, open until 3am, regularly holds later music nights and events on the lower floor level.Mango Thai

It’s worth noting that whilst the first two Mangos offer a more ‘restauranty’ atmosphere, Ocean Village operates a walk-in only policy for groups under 6—a ‘pop-in for a drink and maybe a bite to eat’ kind of attitude. While you wait for a table, the bartenders will take pride in creating a cocktail especially for you or helping you pick from their extensive back bar selection. Whichever Mango you visit, you’re in for a treat. Delicious, authentic Thai food, a lively atmosphere and good value, makes Mango a ‘must visit’ whilst in Southampton.
