Nuffield Southampton Theatres (NST) has announced today that the UK Ian McKellen tour of one man shows in honour of his 80th birthday, will come to Southampton’s NST Campus theatre. McKellen is touring the country next year revisiting theatres that he has performed in during his career. Sir Ian McKellen performed at NST’s Campus theatre in Edward II in 1969 with the Christopher Marlowe Prospect Theatre Company.

McKellen’s fee and all the profits will be donated to each theatre’s charitable projects. Nuffield Southampton Theatres is a registered charity, monies raised from his visit will support NST’s Impact Fund which funds projects for local young people and emerging artists.

Sir Ian McKellen said “I’m celebrating my 80th birthday by touring a new solo show to theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. “

“Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions.”

Sam Hodges Director of Nuffield Southampton Theatres said, “I’ve been watching Ian on stage for as long as I can remember and remember seeing him speak to us as students at university. His passion for and belief in what we do is so clear and so of course it’s him leading from the front like this. I’m so pleased he’s coming to Southampton to a stage where people still remember his Edward II.”

Sir Ian McKellen is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest actors. He has been twice nominated for the Oscar, and recipient of every major theatrical award in UK and US.

Tickets will be available in the first instance to members of Nuffield Southampton Theatres and then on general release from 17 December. For more information, visit nstheatres.co.uk.
