“Taking the Flounce or Nonsense & Insensibility”
The Sarah Siddons Fan Club launch the Southampton Jane Austen Festival
The iconic Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre, – named after the actress who performed at the Southampton French Street Theatre when Jane Austen lived in the town – were successful in a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to stage a Jane Austen Festival in Southampton to mark the authors bi-centenary in 2017.
Jane Austen spent three periods of her life in Southampton, as a schoolgirl, as a teenager dancing at the Dolphin, and a mature women and aspiring author but her time in the spa town is relatively unknown. The Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre aim to change all that!
They launch the festival with their own interpretation of Jane’s life in Southampton and her family, friends and acquaintances. Her sailor brother Frank, handy with a needle and thread, her landlord sometime Scarlet Pimpernel, the Marquis of Lansdowne, the scandalous Lady Betty Craven and Mr & Mrs Martin determined to put Southampton Spa on the map! If you want a cure for jaundice, scurvy, paralytic disorders, yellow fever & feebleness in young females a trip around Southampton Spa is just what the doctor ordered: Dr John Monkton of course who is determined to inoculate the whole populous against smallpox.
“We are thrilled that the generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has enable us to organise this festival which involves many of the heritage and amenities groups in the town” said Flounce writer & director Cheryl Butler
