The sensational West End and Broadway musical ‘Wicked’ is currently on at Southampton Mayflower Theatre until the 27th October. See it here in Southampton in the newly refurbished Mayflower Theatre!
Ever wonder how the Wicked Witch of the West from the classic Wizard of Oz came to be so wicked? Based on the novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by acclaimed American author Gregory Maguire, this stage show adaption by Winnie Holzman takes you on the journey of the life of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) and Glinda (the Good). We see how these two unlikely friends are thrown into turmoil when the true evil in Oz is revealed!
You certainly don’t need to have seen the Wizard of Oz to appreciated this stage show spectacular, but there are several clever references to much-loved film along the way that those who know the story will love. Wicked is often described as a ‘prequel’ to the Wizard f Oz and the story-line takes you before, during and after the familiar Oz tale.
The stage show is a vibrant and lively performance, full of colour, music, and song. The show is fairly long at 2 hours 45 minutes including interval, but you’ll be so absorbed by the entrancing characters and story that you won’t notice the time.
The dazzling costumes and set design are incredible, especially the sparkle of Glinda’s fairytale dress and the shades of green of the costumes on the residence of the Emerald City. It’s a treat for the eyes! And of course speaking of green, the make-up is also something to behold with Elphaba being entirely green…we wonder how long it takes for her to get made-up and un-made for every show?!
Wicked’s talented cast deliver a fantastic performance both in song, acting and movement. Amy Ross (Elphaba) is inspiring and Helen Woolf (Glinda) will bring a smile to your face with her talent and humour. If you’re an Eastenders fan then look out for ‘Steven Beale’ Aaron Sidwell who plays love interest, Fiyero.
Not only is the show a wonderful experience, but the newly refurbished Mayflower Theatre looks incredible. Sticking with the traditional red and gold, the theatre’s facelift offers more leg room, comfortable seating, and an awe-inspiring setting for any show.
