From 1913 to 1960, Supermarine was a major employer in Woolston. This company built seaplanes on its Hazel Road site that were ultimately successful in the Schneider trophy. The Supermarine Southampton was a 1920s British flying boat, one of the most successful flying boats of the interwar period. It was a development of the Supermarine Swan, which was used for a ten-passenger service between England and France. The seaplanes were further developed by R. J. Mitchell to create the iconic Supermarine Spitfire. Alongside its simpler and more numerous counterpart, the Hawker Hurricane, the Spitfire played an important part in World War II and the Battle of Britain.
Bringing the history back to Woolston, a new restaurant serving all things pizza and pasta has landed – Supermarine. Located just off the Itchen Bridge, Centenary Quay in the newly developed Woolston Waterside (with FREE car parking, yep that’s right!) – it is the perfect spot to unwind and relax, whilst taking in the stunning views of the water (and the sunsets are pretty amazing here too!).
On arrival you are welcomed with a lovely Italian feel and a restaurant so full of history. With the chef’s cooking station plus a huge pizza oven located in the middle of the venue – you feel very much involved in every aspect of your dining experience.
With 3 main sections on the menu (Pizza, Pasta and Salads) you would think the menu would be quite small – but you would be wrong! With over 25 dishes to choose from, deciding on what to eat will be the biggest challenge.
From succulent Grilled Prawns to Roasted Pepper & Goats Cheese Bruschetta to start to Spaghetti Carbonara, Wild Mushroom Risotto and a Smoked Garlic Pizza – you are guaranteed a gastronomic experience whichever dish you decide to opt for.
The Southampton Guide then had the opportunity to make their very own wood-fired pizzas! This experience is something that Supermarine are looking to launch in the New Year – so keep your eyes peeled because it sure is a fun thing to do – who can get their pizza out of the oven in one piece?!
Supermarine definitely has the wowfactor – from both the interior and the food. Everything is fresh and homemade and everyone at Supermarine take pride in all that they do. It is an exciting and brand new reason to #VisitSouthampton and a perfect location for date night, a birthday meal or just a treat for yourself. Take a look at the menu here.
